Northside receives a fixed amount of funding from Chicago Public Schools for each enrolled student. This per-student funding is dedicated entirely to teacher salaries and does not fully cover the staffing needs of the school. Because these funds must be used for instructional positions, student fees help pay for textbooks, classroom supplies, technology, athletics, and other essential resources. Even so, there are many programs and opportunities that fall outside the school's operating budget. While fundraising cannot eliminate the broader CPS funding gap, the generosity of Northside families, alumni, and community supporters plays a vital role in sustaining the exceptional educational experience that makes Northside one of Chicago's premier public high schools.

No. Northside receives the same per-student funding as other CPS high schools. Since it does not qualify for certain poverty-based funding, it receives less overall funding than many schools. Friends of Northside helps fill that gap.

All Northside parents are automatically members of Friends of Northside. There are no membership dues or registration requirements. Every Northside family is part of the Friends community.

We are always looking for new volunteers and board members. No prior experience is necessary. Yes! We welcome volunteers throughout the school year and offer a variety of ways to get involved. Whether you have a few hours to help at an event or would like to serve on a committee, there's a role for everyone. Volunteer opportunities include supporting the Annual Appeal, Open House, Cubby Walk, Teacher Appreciation events, and other school activities.
